Chinese President X Jinping calls for international cooperation on COVID-19 vaccine

BEIJING — Chinese President Xi Jinping has made a call for clos international cooperation on the development and distribution of COVID-19 coronavirus vaccines as soon as they are available.

President Xi give his call for cooperation on Thursday, via a video address in conjunction with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum.

Xi said cooperation would include closer coordination on policies for development and distribution of a vaccine, and “To beat the virus and promote the global recovery, the international community must close ranks and jointly respond to the crisis and meet the tests.”

Two Chinese pharmaceutical companies, Sinopharm and Sinovac, are reported to be in the late stages of their phase two tests of their vaccines. This places the two companies at the top tier of more than a dozen companies across the world that are striving to develop vaccines with high efficacy rates, and with few short-term or long-term side-effects.
