Vietnam's Vingroup will join Japan’s Fujitsu group and Qualcomm to make 5G phones in Vietnam

Vingroup JSC, Vietnam’s biggest-listed firm by market value, said on Friday it had signed a deal Japan’s Fujitsu Ltd. and Qualcomm to manufacturer 5G smartphones in the country.

The Vsmart phones will be manufactured at the Vingroup factory in Hanoi and will be sold in the U.S. and European markets starting in April 2020.

Vingroup launched its Vsmart branded phones in December 2018, seeking to win market share from popular brands Samsung and Apple in Vietnam and in early June started construction on a new factory that will be able to produce 125 million units a year.

The Vsmart phones began sales in Spain in March and in Myanmar in May. Vingroup is now working with partners and distributors to begin sales in other European and Southeast Asia markets and expects that its phones can be an alternative to phones from China, South Korea and the United States.
