AmCham Vietnam’s new executive director is the ex-US Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City

Mary Tarnowka, the new Executive Director of AmCham Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City.

Mary Tarnowka, the former U.S. Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, becomes the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) Vietnam’s new executive director starting today. Tarnowka starts her new position with extensive experience at the highest business and political levels in Vietnam, having been the Consul General of the U.S. Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City between August 2016 and July 2019.

She is an experienced career diplomat who has supported a wide-spectrum of American entrepreneurs and multi-national companies in Asia and has served in U.S. State Department posts in China, India and South Korea.

In addition to her experience in the U.S. State Department, Tarnowka holds two bachelor’s degrees, the first in accounting and the second in urban and regional planning, as well as a master’s degree in taxation and finance and is a certified public accountant.

As a diplomat at the U.S. Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City, Tarnowka was focused on promoting bilateral trade and investment in the southern region of Vietnam and has been involved in a period with changing dynamics in the U.S.-Vietnam relationship, which has included two visits to Vietnam by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Commenting on her new position with AmCham, Tarnowka expressed her hope to create new business opportunities for AmCham members and strengthen Vietnam-U.S. trade and investment relations.

Many American business people who are active in Vietnam business, but have never had a reason to join AmCham, are hoping that her experience and fresh viewpoints can lead AmCham to opening up from a chamber that only focuses on large multi-national companies to an inclusive chamber that allows entrepreneurs, individuals, start-ups and non-conventional companies to join AmCham and participate in the evolving Vietnamese business market.

 Editors Note:

AmCham Vietnam will be hosting a welcome dinner for Ms. Tarnowka on September 19th at the Reverie Saigon
and encourages members of AmCham as well as American’s who are not currently members of the chamber to
join them. For more information – Click here.
