Topic: Are you ready to be a ‘living’ brand in Vietnam?

So much has changed in the role brands play in people's lives. Brands are now the real target, and real people in the real world are in control.

While the world has changed around us, we as marketers are still doing the same thing, looking for the same answers … hoping for different results.

We need to stop looking at brands as static entities in need of a bit of advertising. We need them be present and participatory in people’s lives

Static brands cannot survive. Living brands engage, inspire and ultimately grow.

Vincent Van Dessel is the Chief Executive Officer, Y&R/Wunderman Vietnam and moved to HCMC in September last year. He has 15 years experience in the advertising industry including senior management roles at major multinational agencies; he was most recently CEO McCann Brussels where he oversaw its merger with Lowe.

With experience spanning multiple categories, Van Dessel’s expertise extends from strategic planning to account and brand management. Awards won and awards judged include Effies, a Grand Effie, Cannes and New York Festivals.

Van Dessel is fluent in 3 languages (and working on his Vietnamese), has a Master in Law, a Master in Sales and Marketing Management and is a graduate of INSEAD’s Executive Program in Singapore.

The Sports Entertainment business is a multi-billion dollar global business however this business is still new and relatively unknown in Vietnam.

XLE is the pioneer in this field and has a vision to inspire a change in how sports are delivered and perceived in Vietnam and to instill confidence that Vietnam sports can have success on the international stage through proper preparation and presentation.

By taking a long-term development approach, and by introducing the concept that sports can be a viable business in Vietnam, XLE, with the Saigon Heat basketball team, SSA, the Vietnam University Games and other sports projects is raising the awareness of the sports entertainment business in Vietnam.

In this session, Connor Nguyen, CEO of XLE will share his thoughts on “How to Build the Sports Entertainment Model in Vietnam” and will discuss how his company has developed brand awareness in a new business category and lessons on advertising, branding, marketing and media.

Connor Nguyen is blazing new trails in the sports entertainment business in Vietnam. Connor was born in Vietnam but grew up in U.S. since he was 4 years old. During that time he worked both in the corporate world and sports area. Connor worked as a business analyst for Shell Oil and Gas Trading Company and later established his own tennis academy, coaching players on the professional tour.

Connor moved to Vietnam in 2008 and founded SSA (Saigon Sports Academy), a sports training school that develops youth from 4-18 years old in several sports including football, basketball, swimming, and tennis. He later co-founded the Saigon Heat, Vietnam’s first professional basketball team, competing in the ABL (ASEAN Basketball League). Since then several additional sports properties have been developed under the XLE holding company including VUG, UniGames, and VBA.

XLE’s vision is to be the pre-eminent sports leader in Vietnam by building a sustainable business model through delivering sports as entertainment and providing premier player development programs.
