
In December 2005, investment bank Goldman Sachs named Vietnam as one of the "Next Eleven" economies expected to "be the next BRICS" of the 21st century, and in a research report in April 2008, the bank called Vietnam "the next Asian Tiger in the making." The Southeast Asian country was also included among the Economist Intelligence Unit's "CIVETS" (Colombia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Egypt, Turkey and South Africa), considered as emerging markets to watch over the next 10 years. How much of this is the truth?
In this episode, we bring you closer to Vietnam through the eyes of Mr. Tony Burchill, an expert in trade & investment development who will provide his perspective on the next Asian tiger.
Since September 2007, Tony Burchill he has been the Senior Trade Commissioner for Vietnam based in HCMC. In addition, he is the ASEAN Team Leader for Mining and Resources. Prior to Vietnam, he worked as the Trade Commissioner in Jakarta from 1996-2001; as the Industry Specialist for the Global IT Team in Melbourne from 2001- 2004; and as the Trade Commissioner in New Delhi 2004-2007, including oversight of Pakistan and Infrastructure Projects for South Asia.
Tony has qualifications in Economics and Asian Politics/History from the University of Melbourne, a Graduate Diploma in Marketing from Monash University and a Masters of Business (eBusiness) from RMIT. He also taught Marketing Planning at Monash University. Previous professional roles include Financial Journalism at Fairfax and Project Management at Mobil Oil.
