Notebook IWOM in China

Internet Word of Mouth (IWOM) research and consulting firm CIC has once again kept its ear to the ground and made sense of the buzz. Focusing this time on the mainland China notebook computer industry, the analysis is underpinned by 1,204,117 BBS messages from mainland China. These messages were written by 160,926 different user names from July 1 to September 30, 2007 and encompassed 739 notebook computer models, 27 notebook manufacturers and 71 series brands. Using its patent pending data collection, the Shanghai based firm helps companies in the industry to listen in on any consumer 'talk' on the Internet regarding their notebook brands, products or features. The study indicates a strong group mentality among users wanting to share information and opinions online. This suggests that blogs and other such platforms will continue to be rich sources of brand knowledge for both companies and consumers in future.

The scope of the study comprises research on 14 sports brands, 598 basketball and football athletes and 187 basketball and football teams. These messages, all pertaining to sports, were written between October 1 and December 31, 2007 by 296,017 individual user names.
